Château Haut-Brion 2016

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest of the five Bordeaux first growths and is located in Pessac-Léognan. The vineyard is planted with red varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot as well as white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The red Cuvee contains more Merlot than other wines from the Left Bank, which makes it rounder and softer. There is also a white wine, which is generally even more expensive than the red wine and is one of the best white Bordeaux.

Let's focus on the 2016 vintage I tasted, which is one of the successful vintages. A very elegant wine, lightly perfumed with notes of delicate red cherry, plum, blackcurrant, subtly integrated wood in the form of a bitter chocolate note and after proper aeration it also shows a note of sweet tobacco.

Tannins are already well integrated but still need a bit of maturity, but will be drinkable quite soon.

I would indicate the drinking window as follows: 2025-2040

Goes well with game dishes, bison steak but also poultry.

The price of Haut-Brion is very stable and there are no big jumps, in my opinion always a good choice if you don't want to wait decades to enjoy the wine. It is best to keep an eye out for closed wooden cases as they are particularly suitable as an investment.
