Leroy 1er Cru 1999

The House of Leroy has a long history in Burgundy, founded in 1868 and since then the Domaine has enjoyed a high reputation. Currently managed by Lalou Bize-Leroy, who was previously involved in the development of the wines of the Domaine de la Romanee Conti. A distinction must be made between ‘Domaine’ and ‘Maison’ Leroy. The Domaine wines always have a red capsule, which is almost always a wax capsule, whereas the Negociant wines always have a white capsule.

In this case, it is a Negociant bottle of a 1er Cru from the ‘Morgeot’ vineyard that I was allowed to taste at a dinner at Domaine de Chevalier in Bordeaux.

This is exactly what distinguishes an average Burgundy from a first-class one, namely how the wines can mature in the bottle. Madame Leroy almost always offers very mature wines for sale every year and you shouldn't think they are too old. Our bottle from the 1999 vintage is not even at the peak of its development.

Candied lemon, ripe apple, jasmine but also notes of subtle wood that are so elegantly integrated that you only notice them through the nutty and light honey flavours. Velvety and silky on the palate with a soft, almost Viognier-like structure and still enough freshness, very light-footed, almost feminine. A breathtakingly long finish.

The wines have become very expensive in the last 5 years and are an excellent investment if you can get some at a reasonable price.
